Before it became a tourist magnet, this part of the state was wild, uncharted territory - all swamp and subtropical heat. Fort Myers rose out of the wilderness as an outpost in the Seminole Indian Wars, and later, a Union stronghold during the Civil War. At the turn of the 20th century, it was a center for cattle trade, complete with cowboys, saloons, buried gold, and gunfights. It took a turn for the sophisticated soon after Thomas Edison took up residence in 1877. The inventor was so enamored with the city, he built his winter estate there, invited pal Henry Ford to move in next door, and then proceeded to line the city’s main drag with Royal Palms.
